On Saturday 10 August 2024, volunteers from the Australian Islamic Medical Association’s Victorian branch conducted a Lifesavers event at the Australian Albanian Islamic society’s Youth Centre, engaging over 45 children and adults.
The event featured demonstrations on critical lifesaving skills, including CPR, recovery positioning, and defibrillator usage, led by a team of medical professionals, including a neurosurgeon, an orthopaedic surgeon, GPS medical registrar, pharmacist, and physiotherapist.
Dr Sameera Bhayat led the session on CPR, with hands-on demonstrations by Dr Mohammad Awad and Dr Ash Chehata. Interactive participation was encouraged, with Dr Ash Chehata’s homemade cookies offered as rewards for correct answers, adding a fun and engaging element to the day.
AIMA expressed heartfelt thanks to the Australian Albanian Islamic Society for recognising the need for such an event and providing a platform to educate the community in an inspiring way.
The event was a resounding success, with positive feedback from participants, including one who initially had concerns about working with teenagers but later described the experience as “amazing,” praising the interaction and quality questions from the group. We resonate his dua.
